Friends of Haiti,
At long last there is a complete government in Haiti and now, hopefully, they can get about the task of tearing down and rebuilding. The man chosen for the Prime Minister position is a man who has been involved with the U.N for several years as well as Bill Clinton’s Foundation for Haiti. The vote in the lower house was 89-0, so he is well liked.
At present, Haiti continues to struggle with the rebuilding and with the on-going cholera epidemic. It has killed over 6,000 and sickened thousand more. The epidemic was caused by one U.N. person who decided to empty their waste into a known water-way.
We are in the process of starting our rooms in Port Au Prince. We have repaired two walls on two sides of where it will be. We’ve cleared the ground where it will be, and this month we will pour the foundation. That part could be done now, but I want to be there when it is all done, through to completion. If we are going to sleep in it, I want to know things are being done the way I want them done. No short cuts. Not that anyone would, but…
School is being postponed until the 3rd of October because the government didn’t feel parents would be able to have their kids ready before then. And honestly, they never are. Which is why a large number of kids go to missionary schools. They don’t have the worry the public schools do as far as paying the teachers or buying all the supplies needed.
There is still a need for help with the water in Canaan; who knows how long they will be there? There were reports the homeless number had fallen to below thirty five thousand, but what the report didn’t say is that figure is for one area. The estimated total is still over 500,000 and the fear is they may never have what you would call a real home to go to.
All the programs, except for the schools, are running at full speed and they are doing so because of your sacrifices for them. Paul speaks of a partnership with the church at Philippi and in them helping him share the gospel (Philippians 1:3-5). We feel the same way each time we see one of the programs at work. We are there, but if not for your partnership with us in doing this, it would not happen. And sharing the Gospel is the most important thing we do with and for them.
Serving HIM together,
Steve and Terry
